Rangers fans rarely agree on anything but I think it’s safe to say that one thing we can agree on is that strengthening in midfield is a priority this summer.

We’ve heard Stewart Robertson talking about having to sell “one or two” players but we’ve also heard Michael Beale hint that we could see players of a higher standard targeted to take us to the next level.

There’s already been a few rumours, John Lundstram and Allan Campbell have been mentioned and this week we have seen Juninho Bacuna of Huddersfield Town being linked, however, the most exciting speculation to date has been the latest news that we are keeping an eye on SC Heerenveen’s highly rated Dutch midfielder Joey Veerman.

The original report came from his homeland via Voetbal International, a common theme with Rangers nowadays that stories tend be be generated from where the player is from rather than the Scottish press, and with nine goals and 10 assists it’s easy to jump to the conclusion that he is being eyed as a potential replacement for Scott Arfield, who isn’t getting any younger.

The Daily Record analysed just what the 22-year old would bring to Steven Gerrard’s midfield and at over 6ft tall the £6.3million rated Netherlands youth cap would bring a good balance of technical ability whilst being able to handle himself, early comparisons to Barry Ferguson may be a little wild but exciting none the less.

He won’t come cheap seeing as his contract doesn’t expire for another few seasons and because of his form in the Eredivisie, but if we can secure other targets without splashing out, Veerman could well be worth the investment.
