Rangers have confirmed the first transfer activity of these closing stages of the current window with an expectation from the supporters that more is to follow.

Polish full-back Mateusz Zukowski returns to his homeland without having made a significant impact within the squad, even though he was back-up to the club captain and virtual ever-present, James Tavernier.

Having arrived from Lechia Gdansk in January of this year, Zukowski was deemed to fill the void left by Nathan Patterson following his then-club record sale switch to Premier League Everton. Now, just over six months later, the Polish U21 international has signed a loan deal with Lech Poznan which is expected to be converted to a permanent arrangement at the end of the season.

A combination of not fully impressing and settling in Glasgow as well as the efforts of Adam Devine means that the Pole’s stay at Ibrox appears destined to be a short one.

The emergence of Auchenhowie graduate Devine has changed the picture in regard to cover for Tavernier and that looks set to be the arrangement going forward.

Moves

So, with the Queen of the South game on Tuesday evening, followed by the close of the transfer window and the Old Firm encounter looming on Saturday, it is set to be a manic few days.

Champions League qualification has provided a massive boost to finances to enable some further flexibility with budgets. Even without that, the team is crying out for quality at right wing and a huge question remains in central defence with the continued absence of Ben Davies, John Souttar and Fil Helander.

Then there is central midfield. It has been many years since the club spent serious money, any real money on such an important position. Will we finally see a ‘number 8’ box to box player arrive? There is certainly the scope and need for such an arrival.

The club’s massive wage bill also needs trimmed, where possible. The likes of Katic, Kelly, Sakala are unlikely to play so they should be moved on in their own interests. In fairness, the former two have been made available, so now it is just a case of getting business done.

Fashion Jnr got a few minutes in Eindhoven last week but that has been his total so far this term. He has more to offer but it appears that it won’t be under GvB. There is a decent sale waiting to be done, there.

All roads lead to a busy Wednesday with an expectation on the outside, following the huge ask put on the fans in terms of Champions League ticket pricing, that a quality signing or two will follow.
