35-goal strike star shouldn’t follow in footsteps of Gers loan flops

We’ve spoken about him before on Vital Rangers but, when you’ve just scored your 34th and 35th goals of the season, I think it would be rude not to talk about Tony Weston again.

The 18-year old signed from Blackpool when he was just 16 and must now be pushing for more regular time training with the first-team, after all, what else is he supposed to do – he’s a striker scoring goals every game, regardless of the opposition.

Weston’s biggest issue is that he isn’t 6ft tall but, this isn’t to say that he needs to bulk up either though, Ally McCoist and Jermain Defoe were hardly physical specimens but they knew how to use their body to their advantage – over 650 career goals between them suggests that they managed to overcome this disadvantage.

Putting the ball in the back of the net is the hardest skill in football, this is why strikers are so expensive and why good ones who can score better than a goal every two games don’t grow on trees, Weston is already at an advantage in that he has an ability that is rare in players of his age.

The biggest problem is how he transitions from B team/academy football to the first-team, we have had players in the past who have looked good, even in recent seasons with Kai Kennedy and Josh McPake but have struggled with the step up, Weston though, has been much more prolific at a higher level considering he’s not just been playing Under-18’s.

I’m not a fan of players going out on loan purely for the sake of it, historically, only Allan McGregor and Charlie Adam have taken that step and then made an impact when they returned, there is no reason why Weston can’t be promoted next season and be the third choice striker, or fourth if you include Fashion Sakala.

As we saw against Aberdeen, and as we see most weeks, we need players who can find space when there isn’t any and reacted quickest in the box to deflections and ricochets, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney were given their big breaks as teenagers, why shouldn’t we do the same with Weston?
