When Tom Lawrence stretched to retrieve a loose ball in the dying seconds with Rangers 4-0 up over Ross County, little did he know that two months later he would still be injured – how the Welshman would want to have that moment back when he sits on the couch to watch his country play in the World Cup.

Who knows, Giovanni van Bronckhorst might still be in a job.

Lawrence recently topped a poll by This is Ibrox that asked who will make the biggest impact when they return; Ianis Hagi, Connor Goldson or Lawrence with the 28-year old, undoubtedly, the signing of the summer.

There were a few sceptics when he was first announced but those have quickly been silenced by not only his numbers – three goals and two assists in nine games – but also by his general play.

Lawrence is exactly what we were missing before this season and his absence has been felt more than anyone’s since he broke down at Ibrox, including Goldson’s.

He is the perfect foil for John Lundstram when playing as a number eight but, against better opposition, he offers an attacking threat as well as defensive discipline. His versatility makes him hugely important for a manager that likes to be flexible.

Lawrence has taken to social media explaining his frustration at how his season has gone:

“Tough couple of months with injuries, the hard work continues to get back under the lights“

It’s only one word but “injuries” backs up what we heard from the club in that he had recovered from his knee injury only to suffer something different on his return to full training.

Seeing Lawrence back in a match-day squad will give everyone at the club a lift, one man can’t make a team, but they can make a big difference, especially to one that has been struggling.
