Former Rangers star Artur Numan believes the club should be looking to keep Alfredo Morelos during the upcoming summer transfer window, as reported by The Sunday Post.
The future of Morelos has been a much discussed topic over the last couple of weeks after he let the team down in a big match against Celtic with yet another avoidable sending off.
Some feel the club should be actively looking to cash in on the player, while others are sure he needs to stay if we’re to have any chance of stopping our city rivals win another league title next season.
Numan is firmly in the latter camp, feeling the Colombian would not be easily replaced.
As quoted by The Sunday Post, the former Dutch international said:
My view is that they keep the player for one more year. For obvious reasons, next season is absolutely massive. When you have a player in your team that is capable of scoring 30 goals, you do everything you can to keep that player.
How do you replace a 30-goal-a-season striker? Not very easily.
But Morelos must also be made aware that he has to behave on the park. Had he not been suspended so often this season, then he would have hit 34 or 35 goals, easily.
The way he loses his temper on the park and retaliates in certain situations is not acceptable. He cannot allow himself to be provoked so easily. He needs to show greater self-control and maturity. Yes, he can score goals for sure, but you need to show the full package.
I’m sure Steven Gerrard has had conversations with Alfredo, and his team-mates will have as well. As a footballer, he is talented and is developing well. He has scored some brilliant goals and there are many more to come, I’m sure.
Jermain Defoe has demonstrated in Morelos’ recent absence that there’s more to life than the 22-year-old at Ibrox, but whether or not the veteran forward can produce the goods over a long, gruelling season is another story.
Morelos has let down the team badly this season, but he has loads to offer too and we should only be selling the player if the perfect deal comes along that allows Steven Gerrard to re-invest heavily into the first-team squad.
It’ll certainly be an interesting summer.
