One of the biggest surprises last week and one of the biggest reasons for the defeat to Celtic, was that dynamic new players like Todd Cantwell and Nico Raskin spent most of the game on the bench having to watch a pedestrian midfield performance.

Against Kilmarnock, quality of opposition accepted, we saw once again what they will bring to a new look Rangers XI, Cantwell especially showing what he can do with, and without the ball.

Speaking after the game, Michael Beale was clearly happy with Cantwell’s display and picked up that he maybe isn’t the lightweight that many expected him to be, as reported by by The Rangers Review:

“Obviously, he went in and played in the position Malik’s been playing where he can get up and and get close to the goal.

“Similar to Ianis Hagi, he needs runners, he needs speed. When he gets his eyes up, he needs to see movement. You can see that he’s a lovely football player, lots of energy.

“He regained the ball a lot for us today. I thought he put in a really good performance.”

Cantwell is exactly the type of player that we have been looking for for years, all he needs to do is start adding goals and he will cement himself as a fans’ favourite.

If you looked at his stats for the game, I don’t think even the most optimistic of Rangers fans would have thought that he would be that type of player and this is him short of match fitness too.
