Speculation surrounding Alfredo Morelos’s possible replacement has been mounting and the same outlet that reported that he had “agreed” terms with Lille – Get French Football News – claim that the Ibrox club have stepped up their interest in Josh Maja.

The Bordeaux striker – valued at £5.67million on Transfermarkt – has been linked with Rangers before with a stumbling block being his reported £57,000 per week salary, there would have to be some stellar work from Ross Wilson to get this one over the line.

Maja was at Sunderland prior to his move to France and the 21- year old has a respective goals per minute ratio of one every 112 minutes, he fits the profile required to lead the line for the Light Blues and would command a decent transfer fee, however, if he were to impress, there is no reason why Rangers couldn’t double their money further down the line.

In what season did Steven Gerrard make his Liverpool debut?

Morelos was rumoured to have agreed terms with Lille earlier on Sunday but this story was later rubbished by The Athletic with a transfer fee of £13m plus add ons rejected by Rangers.

Since football was called to a halt in Scotland and the 2019/20 season ended in March, Steven Gerrard has been linked with a host of strikers both domestically and from across Europe and, before the recent speculation, had called for greater numbers and support from the board.

Gerrard was already looking for additional fire power and with Jermain Defoe being injured, any move for Morelos would have to wait until reinforcements are through the door, whether or not Maja is the man to replace him, only time will tell.
