Rangers have made a habit of entertaining – and beating – Premier League opposition during pre-season friendlies over the years, this season saw West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur come to Ibrox in two entertaining fixtures, 12 years ago though, we saw the visit of someone that nobody would ever expect to be a potential hall of famer.

When Newcastle United were defeated 2-1, a consolation goal scored by Peter Lovenkrands no less, a certain James Tavernier came off the bench as an 81st minute substitute to make his Magpies debut as a fresh faced teenager.

The Gers skipper was never really given a proper chance to fulfil his potential in the north east with several unsuccessful loan spells ending with him heading to Wigan Athletic before Mark Warburton brought him to Rangers for a paltry six-figure fee.

Now, after his 350th appearance, it can be safely said that it has been money well spent. An incredible 84 goals and 107 assists is a return that most wingers would be proud of and, at 30-years old, Tavernier looks like he has no intentions of slowing down any time soon.

Last season’s exploits in the Europa League, where he incredibly finished top goalscorer, caught the eye of many and, after celebrating reaching his milestone on Instagram, a certain Jude Bellingham was quick to praise the Gers right-back.

Tavernier looks set to finish his career at the club now and there is no reason why he can’t be equally as effective in the next few years given his athleticism and durability, alongside Connor Goldson, it must be a manager’s dream to have players who are always available and churn out such a consistent level of performance.

Hopefully the “player” can inspire another famous European night like the ones we saw last year and drag us into the Champions League play-off round, nothing would surprise me less if Tavernier’s name is either on the score sheet or responsible for creating the goals that get us there.
