Rangers’ surprise move for 6ft 1in star surely means the end for two players in Gerrard’s squad

Rangers are set to launch a move for Hearts defender John Souttar during this summer’s transfer window, according to The Daily Record.

The paper reckon that Director of Football Mark Allen has identified the 22-year-old as a top defensive target, with a number of exits in the centre-back position expected.

With three years left on his current deal at Tynecastle, it would likely take a seven-figure fee to convince the Edinburgh side to part company with the Scotland international, says the report.

Souttar was in impressive form today at Hampden during the Jam Tarts’ Scottish Cup semi-final clash against Inverness CT, making a number of key defensive interventions and scoring the second goal in a 3-0 win.

His arrival would surely spell the end for Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley at the club.

Worrall’s loan from Nottingham Forest expires at the end of the season but as recently as this week his defensive partner Connor Goldson hoped he would stay in Glasgow.

A move for Souttar though means it wouldn’t make much sense to try and make his loan permanent.

McAuley meanwhile has played just a handful of matches for Rangers this season and the arrival of Souttar again pushes him down the pecking order, making the likelihood of him winning a new contract slim.
