Being Ross Wilson at the moment must be like playing a real life version of Championship Manager, or Football Manager if you were born this side of the millenium.

The sporting director is going to be a busy man this summer, between juggling who can and will be sold with attracting potential replacements for key players who have performed so admirably in what could yet be a record breaking season.

One position that always attracts the most attention is in attack with Rangers likely to be looking for two but almost certainly adding one more goalscorer to replace the departing Jermain Defoe.

It’s a difficult role to fill, you could opt for a youngster but then you’d rather that they were out playing games, scoring goals and developing their talents and if you spend decent money on a player, you would want them to be playing regularly to justify not only their age but also their transfer fee.

The third, and – in my opinion – best option, is the free transfer market, players that don’t come with a fee, have a proven track record but wouldn’t expect to play every week. Step forward Daniel Sturridge.

We have been linked with the former Liverpool striker – who is rated at £3.6million – before, but after having his spell in Turkey with Trabzonspor cut short, he has yet to find a new club and Ibrox could be perfect for his next destination.

Would you take a punt on Sturridge?

No

No

He would provide the same quality as Defoe and, given his injury record, having three other strikers to share the load with would mean that his training could be tailored to make sure that he is available when he is needed, rather than all the time, with seven goals and four assists in his 16 appearances last season, there is still a player there – when he is fit.

Our forwards are all capable of offering something different and Sturridge could easily perform the role that Defoe has been doing for the last couple of seasons, he might not have the durability to be a front line striker any more but he could certainly be trusted to back-up those that do.
