Michael Beale is planning for the long-term alongside Ross Wilson, looking to re-energise a team and squad that has, largely, been together for a good few seasons now.

Todd Cantwell epitomises the type of player that they are looking to bring in, alongside Nicolas Raskin and Morgan Whittaker, there is a clear pattern emerging.

One name that bucks this trend is South Korea international Cho Gue-sung, the 25-year old Jeonbuk Hyundai striker who had been attracting interest from Celtic but, according to Alan Nixon, is a transfer target for Rangers too.

Initial reports claimed that Rangers were trying hard to get a deal done but things have died down recently with Nixon explaining, on his Twitter feed, why:

“It’s obvious that the fee has been too high. Buyers went cool. Now sounds like the club want to get a sale … usual transfer market stuff.

“The price needs to come down. Once it has there will be a buyer. And it will then be down to player.

“Will do a story when they get to a price …”

The £3million figure being quoted was never one that we were likely to entertain and that Cho’s club may have been hoping for some sort of bidding war, as it is, Celtic have turned their attentions elsewhere as they look to replace the impending departure of Georgios Giakoumakis.

Our needs are entirely different though in that we need depth and someone who can come in and provide reliable backup and rotation plus, the future of Alfredo Morelos remains uncertain. Getting someone in now and giving them time to bed in without the pressure of being immediate first choice makes a lot of sense.

When the Cho story first broke I thought that we would be better served spending our money on Kevin Nisbet and, with Hibs said to be considering an £1m offer from Millwall, my opinion hasn’t changed.
