Cedric Itten is on the verge of a £1.5 million move back to Switzerland to join Young Boys from Rangers, according to the latest reports in the player’s homeland.

The 25-year old striker made a sustained effort to make things work at Ibrox, but this has just been an unsuccessful move for both player and club, following his move to Glasgow from St Gallen for a reported £2.7million two years ago.

In a quirk of fate, Itten went on loan to Greuther Furth in the Bundesliga for the first half of last season where he scored against Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt. That was after he had netted against Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly. On his return to Rangers in January this year, his only immediate goal return was against Stirling Albion in the Scottish Cup.

Around the time of his recall for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to get a look at him, the Swiss international did not impress when given a chance, as much as he had to hit the ground running fast. That did not happen and from there, his future was sealed in that it would lie away from Ibrox.

Itten did find the net in the last Premiership game of the season, away to Hearts.

In a report from sport.ch, the agreement of the move to prominent Swiss club Young Boys – recent Euro opponents of Rangers – was outlined:

“It should be fixed: Cedric Itten is moving to the BSC Young Boys for the coming season. The Bernese dig deep into their pockets for this. (They have) paid CHF 1.8 million – approx £1.5m -to buy the Swiss out of his contract with Glasgow Rangers.

Return

Credit has to go to Rangers for the recoup of much of the transfer fee that acquired Itten in the first place. This is a very decent return given the relatively poor track record of the player on the pitch during the last two years, though it should still be noted in this time that he picked up caps for Switzerland and netted in the Bundesliga whilst on loan.

He has to use the familiarity of his homeland and the Super League to get his career back on track with Young Boys.
