As reported by The Daily Mail, Rangers are still in the hunt for Hibernian midfielder John McGinn this summer, despite Celtic firming up their interest with a rejected £1.5m bid.

The paper say that Steven Gerrard is keen on bringing him to Ibrox and could go head-to-head with former boss Brendan Rodgers for his signature.

The Hoops have long been expected to be the destination for McGinn after a number of impressive season. With just a year left on his contract, The Mail reckon that Hibs are holding out for £5m for his signature, although that fee seems unrealistic right now.

Rangers have already shown this summer they are willing to lay down cash for serious transfer targets and McGinn would certainly add fresh ideas to what was a stale midfield last season.

Strong, composed and technically sound, the 23-year-old Scotland international has significant potential and beating Celtic to his signing would be a major, major coup ahead of the new season.

There’s also the possibility that the Light Blues can offer him something that the Hoops can’t – first-team football.

With the likes of Scott Brown, Olivier Ntcham, Callum McGregor, Eboue Kouassi and Tom Rogic all competing for central midfield places at Celtic Park, where would McGinn fit in? Opportunities could be limited.

At Rangers there would be no such problem, with McGinn likely possessing the ability to become a number one choice almost immediately. Yes he may be a boyhood fan of Celtic, but he’s a professional first and foremost and moving to Rangers to play under Gerrard could genuinely be best for his development.

It’s certainly worth Rangers’ consideration this week, with time running out on a potential move for the player.
