Steven Gerrard has revealed that he is not looking to add any further new faces to his defence after declaring himself happy with the players he has at his disposal in an interview with Rangers TV, as reported by Glasgow Live.

Few could blame him for being content with the men tasked with keeping the ball out of the back of the net having conceded just one goal all season – against Bayer Leverkusen which was technically last season – and reducing opposition teams to long range efforts in an attempt to break them down.

Rangers have gone six domestic fixtures without conceding a goal from the first game of the season which is a new club record and one that had stood since early in the 20th century.

Speaking about the back line and any potential further transfer business, the Gers gaffer said:

“It’s a good place to be in and when I look at the squad now with four or five weeks left of the window, I’m really content we are complete in those areas and have two really good players in each position.

“The young kid (Nathan Patterson) is pushing Tav, Calvin (Bassey) is pushing Borna and the four centre halves are all good enough to play. I’m really happy with what I have from a back five point of view.”

Filip Helander was a big miss in the second half of last season, his form since returning to the team only serving to highlight what was missing after the winter break – a calm and composed partner for Connor Goldson who allowed the Englishman to concentrate on his own job.

Would you like to see any new faces in defence?

Yes

Yes

No

Leon Balogun has been a surprising bonus along with Jon McLaughlin and both signings, rather than being back-ups, have proven that they have what it takes to contribute to a potentially successful side – as a wise man once said, “forwards win games, defences win championships”.
