Gerrard given Old Firm boost with key man “completely ready” to face Celtic

|

Steven Gerrard has been given a boost ahead of the first Old Firm game of the season with the news that Borna Barisic is fit and available for selection.

The Daily Record reports that the Croatian, who is still on international duty, will play for his country against France on Wednesday night with his manager, Zlatko Dalic, readiness to play:

“Barišić is fine now, we didn’t want to take any risks with him, he skipped those two games, but now he is completely ready and will be ready for the French.”

There had been fears about his fitness after being subbed in his last game for Rangers against Ross County due to an impact injury on his shin and because he hadn’t played in either of the first two games for his international side.

Gary McAllister had initially said that it would just be a short term injury but the lack of information was starting to cause concern, when asked about the left-back after the game against County, he said:

“Borna took a blow just below his shin pad but it’s nothing serious – just some stud marks.”

We should never have doubted Steven Gerrard’s right-hand man, Calvin Bassey has looked assured in his  limited appearances in Light Blue, however, the Croatian offers something different and with one goal and six assists this season he continues to be one of Rangers most potent attacking sources, his absence would have been felt.

Gers fans will now be keeping an eye on the remaining round of games, hoping for all the players representing their countries to return unscathed, with Barisic close to the top of the list for those needing  covered in bubble wrap.
