The standard of punditry in Scotland can sometimes be a bit questionable, however, one thing that isn’t up for debate is that Frank McAvennie shouldn’t be getting paid for his opinion on anything, let alone football.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker has given a bizarre take on James Tavernier extending his contract at Rangers and how it affects Nathan Patterson.

“The manager has been giving him so much praise, now it must feel like he’s been kicked down the pecking order.

“The boy can’t sit there for two years waiting for Tavernier to leave, it’s impossible.

“He has to play all the time, there’s no better way to turn him into a Scotland international, he won’t develop to that level in the Rangers youth side.

“Competition is good but when you praise the boy up like Gerrard has done in the last few weeks then give Tavernier a new contract, it’s like a slap.”

Patterson is only 19 and has only, really, been considered a full first-team member this season, he knows that he has the skipper and, arguably, the team’s best player in front of him, however, it shows how mature he is that rather than throwing his toys out of the pram, he praises the contribution of Tavernier in his development.

McAvennie is clueless, to try and stoke controversy over Rangers handing their captain a new contract is ridiculous, Patterson has plenty of time on his side and, unlike the “pundit”, knows what he is doing.
