Gerrard has been at players “all season” as gaffer reveals biggest complaint

|

Ryan Jack’s screamer against Kilmarnock at Ibrox yesterday may have been a once in a career goal but this didn’t stop Steven Gerrard from demanding more like it in the weeks to come.

It’s something that Rangers fans have been crying out for for years, a midfielder willing to take shots on from outside the box, and with players like Jack, Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara, Scott Arfield, Ianis Hagi and Ryan Kent all capable, it’s a source of frustration that we don’t see goals from distance more often.

Speaking as part of the post match duties, reported by The Daily Record, the gaffer reassured fans that it is something he wants to see more of, and with Jack demonstrating what he is capable of, there really is no excuse:

“It’s a fantastic goal, it deserves to win any football match.

“Jacko’s talking in the dressing room about it being goal of the season but I think Kemar Roofe might steal his thunder on that one!

“But we’ve been encouraging the boys, we don’t shoot enough from the edge of the box.

“We’ve been at them all season, we want people to take chances.

“We’ve scored a few from outside the box, they can take deflections, you can get corners from them.

“We said to them at half-time to never turn a cross down or a shot down, especially when you’re playing against an organised team.

“They took a lot of the information on board today and credit to them for getting another win.

“For me that was at least a 2-0, 3-0 win there if we had gone on and took our chances and shown a little bit of quality on the final bit of our play.”

Of course Gerrard is right, Rangers should have been out of sight, Kent, Aribo and Cedric Itten all had 1 v 1 opportunities and that is before you consider the ineptitude of Don Robertson’s refereeing.

The difference between the first and second half was that we were being more direct, not necessarily launching the ball up to Itten quicker but being more aggressive with our passing in the final third, if only the players had listened to their boss and pulled the trigger a bit quicker on a few occasions we could have had a more relaxing final ten minutes!
