During military leadership courses, it isn’t uncommon to hear instructors use the phrase “if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got”, a derivative of Albert Einstein’s alleged proclamation that doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results is the definition of insanity.

What it means is that, in any walk of life, you will never see change or an improvement in performance if you don’t take proactive action and just hope that things will take a turn for the better.

This is the situation that currently faces Steven Gerrard.

Does he persist with a midfield of Steven Davis, Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo, with Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos playing together in attack when clearly something isn’t right?

For a start, it would be harsh on John Lundstram, who hasn’t just been our best midfielder recently, he’s been our best player.

Rangers went toe-to-toe with Inter Milan to sign Ronaldo when he left Barcelona.

The well publicised problems we have just now are at both ends of the park, one, in closing down opposition defenders playing out from the back, and two, in scoring goals to alleviate pressure off the defence, we can’t keep picking the same players and expect things to just click into place – if we make a tactical adjustment then you could understand painting a consistency of selection though.

There is no point adding the likes of Fashion Sakala and Juninho Bacuna to the squad if they aren’t going to be trusted – it was a shame that the tactics against Sparta had to be changed so early – players with the ability to hurt opposition teams in a variety of different ways, Gerrard spoke about teams getting used to the way we play, well, there is an obvious solution staring him in the face – bring in the new players.
