Steven Gerrard was visibly fuming at his side for not only dropping two points against Motherwell, but for not taking any of the numerous chances that they created to add to their 1-0 lead before or after the break.

It is a problem that has been part of Rangers play since the season kicked off and needs to be eradicated sooner, rather than later, if we are to retain our league title – you would think that automatic Champions League qualification would be a strong motivating factor.

Motherwell didn’t exactly sit in either, yes, they had plenty of players in the box but this was mainly due to how we were dominating and moving the ball around, the fact that we create enough opportunities to put the game to bed proves that we aren’t far away – not that this left the gaffer any less frustrated, as reported by Glasgow Live:

“At 1-0 we have got to go and take our chances, we need people to step up in the final third and be more creative.

“And we need people to take our chances because if that went to 2-0 today, I could see more goals on the back of that.

“At 1-0, I never really felt comfortable on the side so we need to look at that.

“It is two points dropped. I think we were in control for a lot of the game and box-to-box we were outstanding at times.

“But you have got to go and reward yourself for all the good play and unfortunately our quality, once we got into the final third, wasn’t there today.

“We scored one good goal, but for me that was a 3-0 or 4-0 game if we go and reward ourselves for all our good play.

“It feels pretty frustrating at the moment because it is obviously two points dropped.”

You would think that getting the early goal would relax the players and allow them to be more expressive and take risks and yet we still weren’t able to find a breakthrough, Gerrard is right – and most fans will agree – up until Motherwell scored, it was as good as we have played all season.

If there is a silver lining, that must surely be it.

We are top of the league and four points clear of Celtic, a situation that most of a Light Blue persuasion would snap your hand off for at the beginning of the season had it been offered, it’s just that we know this team is capable of so much more, playing in third gear? We’ve not even found second yet.
