Rangers should never be dropping points in a game in which they have had 24 shots on goal, it’s as simple as that, especially when the opposition only has one.
The lack of a cutting edge has been a problem this season, a goal difference of just six after six games would indicate that we are giving too many teams a chance to take points off us and after seeing his side lose a cheap goal, again, Steven Gerrard is far from happy with what he is seeing, as reported by The Scottish Sun:
“We have got to defend situations better.
“We got a lot of praise last year for clean sheets and being really tough to play against.
“But their goal has come from us being a little bit flaky.
“We could have got out wide quicker, we could have dealt with that situation.
“And unfortunately we concede a goal on the back of that and that is where the frustration comes in.”
The gaffer is right, the initial pressure wasn’t good enough and, for all that he wasn’t solely responsible, Jack Simpson’s efforts in stopping Mark O’Hara are exactly what Gerrard is talking about – “flaky” is a perfect description.
Having the odd momentary lapse is going to happen but if we aren’t taking chances at the other end, the defence really has to be more proactive in making sure that we don’t give anything away.
Last season, we weren’t just keeping clean sheets, we were stopping teams from even getting shots off, a return to those days would be greatly appreciated over the next few weeks.
