Rangers star faces wrath of Hutton as “petulant” international lets side down again

|

Former Rangers full-back, Alan Hutton, has revealed he is “sick” of talking about Alfredo Morelos when it comes to his on field behaviour after the Colombian received a yellow card against Braga that puts him out of the away leg in Portugal.

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton praises the striker but also gave the striker some advice on how to avoid letting this team down in the future.

So what has Hutton said?

When asked to reflect on Morelos’ latest misdemeanour, the recently retired Scotland international said:

“It is just petulant, I am sick of talking about it. It is a shame. He brings so much to the team. He is so important. What he gives with his goals and his abilities to run the channels.”

“He has got everything there to be a top striker but it always seems to let him down; this side of the game. I understand, I was the same and I had the occasional red mist. It is the way you play, you play on that line.”

“He really needs to try and curb the reactions, throwing the arms up in the air, the gestures. You can cut that out. It is these silly things that are really hurting the team.”

So is Hutton right?

There is no doubting that Morelos is refereed to a different standard, his reaction on Thursday night was born out of frustration, nothing malicious just doing what every player does when a free-kick is given against him – argue with the referee.

Interestingly, Morelos and the ref were engaged in a conversation at half-time in what seemed to be a cordial exchange with the official almost looking apologetic at having to book the 29-goal forward.

His disciplinary record has been greatly improved this season but there has still been too many cards for avoidable and “silly” things as Hutton rightly says – mainly diving and celebrating goals – and are all easily prevented.

Who should replace Morelos against Braga in the second-leg?

Defoe

Kamberi

Stewart

Had it not been for his dive and subsequent red card in the dying seconds at Parkhead, Rangers could easily still be within touching distance of Celtic instead of ten points behind albeit with a game in hand.

Morelos is the player that makes a difference for the Gers but he has also cost them dearly too, an unfortunate paradox, his team are definitely weaker in his absence and if he is sold in the summer, his replacement will have one of the toughest jobs in Scottish football.
