Gio needs to solve Gers weakness before it’s too late

Allan McGregor in action for Rangers

There’s a weird sense of satisfaction when something that you think is happening on a football pitch is reflected in the statistics, who doesn’t like being proven right?

After dropping points against Dundee United at the weekend and recent goals lost against Aberdeen and Ross County, conceding from corners has very much become a “thing”.

Allan McGregor has never been one for leaving his line but it now appears as though opposition teams are doing their homework and targeting an area in which they perceive us to be weak – an excellent article by Jordan Campbell in The Athletic detailing exactly what the problems are.

That a quarter of our goals against come from corners paints it’s own picture, only four teams have lost more – including Celtic – with Campbell highlighting subtle changes to Alfredo Morelos’s positioning and how McGregor is being provoked into losing focus as key contributory factors – interestingly, after nearly being caught out early against Borussia Dortmund.

What makes it more frustrating is that a lot of the goals we have lost have been preventable and not because of any ingenious set piece plan or because we don’t have the players capable of defending our own box, if we can see this then surely the Rangers coaching staff can see it too and are implementing plans to rectify it, as we have seen, it can be the difference between winning and dropping points.

On paper it looks as simple as moving Morelos as we saw against Dortmund or swapping him with a more dominant header of the ball and persuading McGregor not to get involved with whoever is attempting to block him on the line, however, we all know the story about old dogs and new tricks.
