Much of Rangers success this season has been built on a rock solid defence that has given up just 11 goals in the league all season but this hasn’t stopped the recruitment team from eyeing up potential targets.

Following on from the speculation that Joseph Okumu of Elfsborg has been watched, Foot Mercato, a French media outlet, has claimed that we are tracking Dijon centre-half Senou Coulibaly, as reported by Glasgow Live.

The 26-year old still has a year to run on his contract with the Ligue 1 side and is classed as “all action” by Get French Football News, not only that but he has previously been clocked at an impressive 36 kmph, a valuable asset given the role of a Rangers centre-half and the space that often needs to be covered.

We now know, with Leon Balogun’s extension being confirmed, that we will have six senior centre-halves at the club next season, with Steven Gerrard ideally looking to have four there will surely be a couple of departures.

The favourites to depart will be George Edmundson, who’s promising start at Derby County has been cut short by the need to have a second hernia operation, and Nikola Katic, although the Croatian’s departure is more than likely to be needed to get him game time as he recovers from his knee surgery rather than because he is surplus to requirements.

Ross Wilson and Gerrard have overseen a gradual improvement in the squad window by window and this summer will be no different, but in the case of Okumu and Coulibaly, I’d only expect us to target them if either of our first choice pairing of Connor Goldson or Filip Helander depart – and they won’t be getting chased out of the door anytime soon, one is our vice-captain and the other is yet to lose a league game in his two years at the club.
