Rangers are set to offer defender and captain James Tavernier a new and improved contract after they rejected advances from West Bromwich Albion for his signature last week, according to The Daily Mirror (11/08 Live Blog, 22:24).
The Baggies wanted to bring Tavernier back to English football in the closing stages of the transfer window down south, offering £4m for the player which was swiftly rejected.
The right-back didn’t try and force the move but now wants to be rewarded for his loyalty, with the club also eager to sign him up to improved terms.
That’s despite only signing his current contract in February, committing his future to the club until 2021.
There’s an argument to say that he should not be given a new deal because of that, but for the happiness of the player it’d be best for the Gers to at least open negotiations with his representatives.
His form has improved dramatically in recent months and he is now a captain that fans can be proud of, having been handed the armband permanently by Steven Gerrard this summer.
He now looks like a firm part of Rangers’ short and long-term future and hopefully we are willing to do what it takes to preserve that.
