After sanctioning a Sky Sports interview acknowledging Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s first year in charge as Rangers manager, it was assumed that the board wouldn’t be sacking him any time soon – how little did we know.

A year that has seen us produce some of the best and worst displays in recent memory continues to make little sense with the manager’s tactics ranging from genius to genuinely boring. One of the main reasons why some fans wanted the Dutchman to be relieved of his duties, was a gameplan that, on occasion, made little sense.

Plenty of names have been mentioned in the press with out-of-work former Burnley manager Sean Dyche proving to be popular due to his no-nonsense approach, how this would translate into having to break down low blocks I’m not so sure, however, he certainly appears to have the character and personality needed for the job.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Peter O’Rourke reckons that Dyche would jump at the chance to take charge, if he was given the chance:

“Somebody like Sean Dyche who is out of work could be a potential target for Rangers as well, he’s got links with sporting director Ross Wilson from their time together at Watford.

“He’s out of work and looking for a job, and I’m sure Rangers would be an attractive option for someone like Sean Dyche with what they can offer.”

There’s no doubt that our sporting director will have spoken to Dyche and Ralph Hasenhuttl, both of whom he has worked with before, not to offer them the job, but to assess whether or not they would be interested should the post become available. This isn’t undermining Gio, it’s just basic succession planning.

As it is, I think it is more likely that we will go for a more aggressive coach in terms of style of play next because, as we’ve found out under Giovanni even when he was winning, that simply isn’t enough nowadays.
