Not the Wright option when goals are needed

It’s still early days, 25 appearances to be precise, but Scott Wright’s name in the Rangers line-up is starting to become a bit of a problem.

All season we have struggled to score goals, 15 in nine league games, a far from acceptable number given the quality of player that Steven Gerrard has at his disposal and, again, against Hearts, our profligacy cost us dearly.

The issue with Wright is almost reflective of the whole team, between the boxes he looks great; he presses well, is sharp in possession and has the same ability as Ryan Kent in that he can pick the ball up and drive us 20-30 yards up the pitch, drawing defenders in at the same time. The problem is the end result.

With just three goals and two assists in his 25 games, Wright needs to be upping his numbers pretty sharpish if he doesn’t want the Ibrox crowd to start turning on him, a problem that Kent also suffered from in his early days.

It’s one thing being a good player, and Wright is clearly a good player, but, if you are playing in the Rangers front three, you are judged on goals and assists, even Alfredo Morelos is coming under fire for his recent performances and he has better than a goal every two games plus dozens of assists.

Last season we had five or six players all getting double figures for goals and almost as many assists, at the moment we don’t have a single attacking player who is grabbing games by the scruff of the neck and taking the responsibility that the gaffer so desperately needs them to take – with Kent injured, Wright needs to start firing soon or he will find himself sitting on the bench more often than not.
