Football Insider claims to have the inside track on the rumoured release clause in Ryan Kent’s Rangers contract and if Leeds United want to talk to the in-form forward they will have to stump up £20million – if the report is accurate.

Steven Gerrard refused to be drawn on any specific details when the Premier League new boys interest first surfaced and the Ibrox side rejected a bid in the region of £10m, only to say that the 23-year old wasn’t for sale:

“Every player has different things in their contracts, that’s just the way it is.

“The message to Leeds is the opening bid is nowhere near the valuation and the player doesn’t really have one as we don’t want to sell.

“We want the player to stay here, as do the board. The fans love him also and Leeds will need to respect that.

“They really need to think hard if they want to come in again. The message is ‘hands off’.”

It’s also no secret that Rangers would owe Liverpool a hefty sell-on clause should Kent depart and they would be reticent to sell a player who is now, arguably, their most important, especially if they weren’t going to be rewarded financially.

Who is more important?

The player himself has openly admitted that he has no intention to leave the club this summer and feels that he has finally found a club that he can call home, putting a dent into the Yorkshire club’s chances of persuading him to head south:

“My dialogue with the club was that I am in a very good position and enjoying my football.

“As long as I am playing football and enjoying it I am happy where I am.”

Kent has started the season on fire with four goals and three assists showing that he has finally put the injury problems of last season behind him, if Gerrard has any hopes of wrestling the Scottish Premiership title from across the city, retaining his services could be more important than any signing he makes.
