Not the time to write off Jack, Gers fans must be patient

The goal we lost against Motherwell wouldn’t have happened if Ryan Jack was playing.

It’s easy to say that but, for all that he might have his flaws in the final third, he is the best midfielder we have at filling holes and covering for others, especially down our right-hand side.

The issue though, is that there is no publicised timeline for his return – he could be back in training soon – and that he has missed nearly 50 games over the last two seasons leading many fans to become impatient and call for Steven Gerrard to move on from the Scotland international and replace him with someone who can replicate his output.

It’s not as simple as that though.

In Jack, we have the best in the league at what he does, it’s no coincidence that James Tavernier’s form hasn’t been as good without him in the team, it’s not been bad by any stretch of the imagination but he knows he has to be more considered with his runs into the box, it’s like he is playing with the handbrake on.

Rangers went toe-to-toe with Inter Milan to sign Ronaldo when he left Barcelona.

Jack, like Jordan Rossiter  – who is now fully fit and playing every week – before him, hasn’t had a simple injury that is a quick fix. When a player has persistent muscle injuries without it being the muscles’ fault, it can be a long process to diagnose and then treat the condition, it also isn’t as simple as gradually increasing the intensity in training until they are taking part in matches again.

At 29-years old, Jack has plenty of football left in his legs, that he has missed a lot of time on the pitch could also benefit him in the long run but, we have to be patient, surgery to your spine is a complex affair – particularly anything to do with the nervous system – writing him off now before he has even pulled a Rangers shirt on again isn’t the sort of support that a player of his quality, or importance, deserves.
