According to Football Insider, Rangers are looking to beat a host of English clubs to try and sign Alan Hutton on a free transfer.

The right-back became a bit of a cult hero during his time at Aston Villa and helped them secure promotion to the Premier League – whilst he also scored a wonderful solo goal against Birmingham whilst he was there.

However, Dean Smith decided that he would not take the defender with him into the Premier League and now the 34-year-old finds himself without a club.

The report alleges, then, that Rangers are considering whether they should offer him the chance to come back to Ibrox towards the end of his playing career.

Hutton was a Ger quite a while ago now and has since played in the top two tiers in England and for his country on many occasions.

Could he provide that extra bit of experience we need to get over the line with a trophy, then? That is perhaps what Steven Gerrard is weighing up.
