Watch the two Madden penalty calls that cost Gers, VAR can’t come soon enough

|

Rangers did more than enough to beat Dundee United at Tannadice yesterday, it was actually a surprise that we managed to create so many chances against a team that is notoriously tight, after all, this is a team that sits fourth in the table despite being the second lowest goal scorers in the league.

The first goal was always going to be key and a bright start should have been rewarded with a penalty only for Bobby Madden and his assistant to completely ignore a blatant handball.

The laws are pretty clear and this one ticks a couple of boxes, he leans towards the ball and he has enough time and distance to get his arm out of the way, where the ball is going and who played it is irrelevant, it’s a penalty.

We did well to get back into the game and should have got a second goal, Amad Diallo failing to square it for Fashion Sakala a criminal decision that was punished by the loss of two points but, again, it could all have been a different story if the officials had done their job and awarded a foul for the Zambian international’s shirt clearly being pulled as he is about to score t a corner, it’s not even up for debate – it should also have been a red card because there is no attempt to play the ball and it is a goal scoring opportunity.

Against Dortmund we saw how VAR is supposed to work, one decision that was hard to spot, the other a deliberate error, on this occasion, it was just sheer incompetence from an official who went out of his way to prove that he won’t do us any favours.
