“Soon back doing what I love” – Injury blow for Gers summer signing

Rabbi Matondo arrived at Rangers off the back of a hugely promising season in Belgium, looking like he had finally matured into the player that saw Schalke pay £10million to for his services as a teenager, however, his first season as a Rangers player hasn’t gone to plan.

Identified as the player most likely to take up the problematic right-hand side attacker role, the Wales international looked sharp – if a little inconsistent – in pre-season. It was a shame that the 22-year old then started to have problems with injury and illness as competitive action kicked off.

There has been speculation recently as to why the winger was absent, not just from the team, but from the match day squad. Matondo has come off the bench twice for Michael Beale and for all that he didn’t score, he got himself into some good positions and created chances for others.

Now though, the player himself has spoken, posting on social media about his injury issues.

I feel sorry for Matondo. He is a talented player and he just hasn’t been able to get a run of games under his belt, wingers are notoriously inconsistent as it is and he hasn’t been able to hit the ground in the way that we were expecting.

This doesn’t mean that he should be written off though, he is still young, has shown last season that he has an end product and despite some claims that he has been a waste of money, for circa £2m, there is still plenty of time for him to come good when he is fit again.

Scott Wright appears to be ahead of him in the queue at the moment but Matondo, in my opinion, has a much higher ceiling in terms of potential, he just needs to believe this himself.
