As perfectly timed as an Allan McGregor penalty save, the results of the Vital Rangers Player of the Year award can now be announced.

Nearly 5000 Rangers fans voted with a choice of four players; Allan McGregor, Steven Davis, Connor Goldson and James Tavernier making up a list that could have been a lot longer given the contributions of the likes of Ryan Kent and Glen Kamara.

Tavernier had looked to be walking away with every award going this season when, before Christmas, he was on target to score 20 goals and get 20 assists, again, it doesn’t matter how many times it is said but, these numbers are ridiculous for a right-back and something we are unlikely to ever see again – it will only be once he leaves that we truly appreciated how good he was.

Goldson has been an ever present, the rock on which Steven Gerrard’s transformation of the Rangers defence was built on, his consistency of performance and availability can’t every be underestimated, the £3million paid to Brighton for his services seemed like a lot of money at the time but it has been an absolute bargain – especially when you consider what those across the city have paid for Shane Duffy, just for one season.

McGregor continues to defy logic and his 39 years, the fact that his form is keeping out Jon McLaughlin – 11 clean sheets in 12 games – says it all, and he is now surely primed to take Andy Goram’s place as our best ever between the posts, a Scottish Cup medal to end the season could all but confirm that.

Davis, like McGregor, has been ridiculous, against Celtic, his overhead kick opener – he is 36 and a “defensive” midfielder remember – demonstrated exactly what he brings to Gerrard’s team, he dictates the tempo and rhythm at which we play, when we knew we were on top he pushed us on and provided the moment of magic that put one foot in the next round.

But, there can only be one winner and with an astonishing 42% of the vote your Vital Rangers Player of the Year is, the one and only Allan McGregor – our defensive record has been incredible this season and although Goldson, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun have been huge components of this, when it has mattered most – the pivotal New Year derby for example – the Gers number one has been unbeatable. The best in the business.
