Rangers pip Celtic to pole position for multi-million pound striker as Premier League hopefuls join race

Rangers have jumped to the front of the queue in the battle to secure the signature of £15million rated Peterborough United striker, Ivan Toney according to a report in Football Insider.

Old Firm rivals Celtic and West Brom are said to be the clubs chasing the hitman and although Posh’s Director of Football, Barry Fry, claimed that it would take the headline grabbing figure for him to leave, they have significantly weakened their case by admitting that he is up for sale after the cancellation of season 2019/20 saw them remain in League 1 for another season.

Their Chairman, Darragh MacAnthony, said last week after the EFL voted to cancel the season below the Championship:

“We had multiple clubs try and buy him in January, we promised Ivan if we weren’t in the Championship next season we would sell him.

“We don’t sell our players cheap, the pandemic won’t affect that.

“I can envisage he will probably go to the top two or three Championship clubs if not the bottom ten Premier League clubs.”

The Scottish Sun reported that Brentford had an £8m offer rejected in January although the League 1 side will be in greater need for money, have revealed that he is available and Toney will be approaching the last year of his contract.

Toney is just one of several strikers linked with a move to Ibrox and with 49 goals in 94 games since signing from Newcastle, he certainly has decent numbers over the last couple of years – for the money being talked about he would likely be seen as Alfredo Morelos’s long term replacement but ideally, having two prolific strikers approaching their peak in the squad with Jermain Defoe to guide them, is a forward line that Gers fans have been craving for some time.
