Rangers are set to hand out heavy punishments to the four players being rumoured to have attended an unauthorised gathering late on Saturday night that broke government Covid-19 laws.

Police Scotland issued a statement in which they revealed that 10 individuals were handed with fixed penalty notices but it looks as though it is about to get an awful lot worse for the players concerned, according to Football Insider.

Calvin Bassey and Nathan Patterson are the two most senior players from the group reported to have broken lockdown regulations and with Steven Gerrard reportedly “apoplectic” it’s safe to say that the pair are probably safer away from the Auchenhowie training facility anyway.

In the case of George Edmundson and Jordan Jones, the players were suspended first, pending an investigation and then they received SFA bans of seven matches each, it is, as yet, unsure as to what level of involvement the governing body will take this time.

Should the players be given a second chance?

With rumours of a relatively innocent gathering to watch boxing – and even a game of monopoly – it may seem harsh to treat the players so harshly but it is more about the potential ramifications rather than how harmless their actions may ultimately have been, imagine if one of them had returned to training and then tested positive for Covid-19.

Patterson and Bassey have gone from the prospect of getting league winners medals and a few more appearances under their belts to seeing their Rangers careers hanging by a thread – they have a long way to go to get back in Gerrard’s goods books.
