Rangers are on the verge of signing midfielder Lassana Coulibaly, after choosing to make the move to Scotland instead of signing for French club Metz for the 2018/19 season.

That’s according to The Daily Record, who say the Mali international will join on a season-long loan in time for the UEFA Europa Qualifier with FK Shkupi.

Coulibaly joined Angers last summer, but made just 19 appearances for the club in Ligue 1 and the hope will be for all parties that he gets the first-team football he needs working under Steven Gerrard.

With 10 caps for Mali and over 60 career appearances in the French top-flight, the 22-year-old would certainly appear to have the quality required to shine in the Scottish Premiership and adds significant depth to the midfield positions at Ibrox.

With Scott Arfield showing signs he could be a massive hit, Ross McCrorie stepping up and the likes of Graham Dorrans in support, Gerrard suddenly has a few quality options at his disposal with the arrival of Coulibaly.

A physical, defensive minded midfielder, he is potentially a player that will finally give the Rangers defence the midfield screen they’ve been lacking for ages now.

At times last season, the side were just far too weak in the middle of the park, with the opposition regularly overwhelming the Gers’ under pressure defensive line.

Given the many signings so far this summer since Gerrard took charge, the Ibrox side will look almost unrecognisable as the new season kicks off.
