Rangers have won the league cup more than any other team, for a while, even during the ’80s when we were struggling in mid-table, we were able to keep adding it to the trophy cabinet as if it belongs to us – aside from the injustice of 2019 though, we’ve barely looked like winning it at any other point in the last decade.

On the other side of the World Cup break, we have the chance to make things right with the first silverware of the season up for grabs, however, the young team have already shown the seniors how to do it by beating their Old Firm rivals in a comprehensive 4-1 victory at the Falkirk Stadium yesterday.

Going 3-0 up in the first half put the Under-16s into a great position before an – in fairness, excellent – free kick saw us pegged back to 3-1 at the break.

The second half was a bit of a scrappy affair but the more physical Rangers side defended resolutely and rarely gave their opponents a sight of goal before Lewis Stewart added a fine individual effort for the fourth, Josh Gentles, Callum Anderson and Cameron Scott with the other goals.

It might only be Under-16s, but for these boys, beating Celtic in a cup final is massive and they will know that people who don’t normally pay attention to youth football will have been watching.

These games are where we first saw Billy Gilmour, Nathan Patterson, Leon King and Alex Lowry, one of the boys who performed so admirably could one day be lining up for the first team too. Remember the names, you might just be singing them in the future.
