Nikola Katic has his limitations as a centre-half and is prone to the odd mistake, however, he has enough credit in the bank with the fans and management team that if he proves his fitness over the next few months, he should be recalled and immediately return to the Rangers squad.

Katic can point to several appearances in Old Firm derbies and the Europa League that proves he has the potential to be a very good centre-half, something that, as yet, Jack Simpson has yet to achieve, at least with the Croatian it isn’t a struggle to identify what he is good at when it comes to keeping the ball out of the net.

With Filip Helander out long-term and both Leon Balogun and Calvin Bassey likely to be away on international duty with Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations in the new year, the common sense thing to do is to recall Katic in January – he has played well with Connor Goldson in the past and has at least shown that he can cope with the physicality of the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers went toe-to-toe with Inter Milan to sign Ronaldo when he left Barcelona.

Steven Gerrard spoke about the Croatian international needing games but there is also a point where he has to prioritise the needs of his own squad, it was a tough task for Calvin Bassey against Sparta Prague but the standard of opposition is irrelevant when it comes to the basics like looking along a defensive line to make sure you are in the right position, something he failed to do on numerous occasions, he just looked out of his depth, even if his inexperience can be accepted as an excuse to a certain extent.

If it doesn’t look like we can bring in an upgrade when the transfer window opens, there is a very easy and obvious solution to our current problem – free Katic!
