Predictably, after Newcastle United lost the first game of their new Saudi backed era, speculation that Steve Bruce is going to be sacked as their manager has intensified.

And, one of the names at the top of preferred candidates to replace him is our very own Steven Gerrard according to several reports south of the border, The Mirror claiming he is on a three-man shortlist along with Roberto Martinez and Unai Emery, three managers with completely different approaches to the game.

One of the main reasons that Dave King, Mark Allen and Stewart Roberston were able to persuade Gerrard to head to Ibrox was the status of of the club, the task at hand and how our goals matched his own, it’s well known that he turned down other opportunities in England to sign for Rangers – in his own words, it was a “no-brainer“.

Personally, I can’t see him wanting to leave us in the middle of the season, top of the table and with the prospect of Champions League football on the horizon to go to Newcastle for a relegation battle because, regardless of how much money they might have to spend – up to a reported £190million – it doesn’t guarantee that they will be safe at the end of the campaign.

They might well become a Champions League club again in their own right and challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, but, I’d be more inclined to bet on Gerrard being at Anfield by then, rather than St James’ Park.
