Rangers have “made an approach” for Newcastle United’s Jacob Murphy according to a report in Football Insider – the site that got the jump on the Scottish media with the signings of Jon McLaughlin and Calvin Bassey.

The 25-year old is a right-winger by trade and despite not producing his best form for the Magpies since signing for £10million from Norwich City, he managed to contribute nine goals and six assists in 39 appearances on loan at Sheffield Wednesday last season.

Steven Gerrard is still looking for extra quality to add to his starting XI and matchday squad with Murphy likely being targeted to replace Jordan Jones who has been told to find himself a new club.

Brandon Barker has started with renewed purpose this season and appears willing to finally repay the faith that the Gers gaffer continues to have in him, his performance against Kilmarnock was a step in the right direction but he still has some way to go before he can be considered a valuable asset and capable of being involved in a title winning team.

One player who isn’t going anywhere is Ryan Kent who has apparently told Gerrard that he is only interested in Rangers following the boss’s comments at the weekend where Leeds United were given a “hands off” warning.

Wholesale changes were never needed this summer and if we can get one or two more players of genuine quality for the middle of the park and right wing then it can be seen as a successful window, especially if Alfredo Morelos is the only departure – which has been a long time coming – and his transfer fee pays for those that have arrived.
