And as if by magic, Eddie Howe has completely proven the point that Vital Rangers made about the snobbery towards the SPFL and how, after their embarrassing defeat to Cambridge United, they would likely overspend on someone who will do little to get them out of their current predicament.

Sky Sports has reported that they are to pay around £25million for 30-year old Chris Wood – and to think they thought they were getting Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe – with the Burnley striker being identified as the man to lead them out of the relegation zone.

A goal every three games for Burnley and Leicester City and a goal every two for Leeds United in the Championship gives him 50 goals in 153 Premier League appearances, respectable, but hardly the sort of numbers that a number nine for a club looking to climb a few places would be expected to produce.

That he hasn’t exactly been banging them in for Burnley and they themselves are down at the foot of the table isn’t a great sign either.

It sounds like I’m trying to get rid of Alfredo Morelos but, really, nothing could be further from the truth. I just can’t for the love of me understand why a player with his record in the Europa League and in the SPFL gets overlooked so often – he’s five years younger and has demonstrated that he can play in different systems, Wood is very much an old fashioned target man regardless of his record in the Premier League.

From which country does Dundee United keeper Benjamin Siegrist come from?

At least we don’t face the prospect of trying to hang on to one of our best players after weeks of him being linked with a move to the north east of England.

I suppose it’s their money and they can do what they want with it, I can only think that they are preparing for life in the Championship already.
