Time is right for Morelos to move on but memories make up for missing millions

And now, the end is near, and so we’ve reached the final curtain.

It’s safe to say that Alfredo Morelos’s time at Rangers has been nothing if not eventful but few would have expected the quiet 21-year old kid who arrived from Finland to end up being our record goalscorer in Europe by the time he left.

Pound for pound, there are few Rangers signings that match El Bufalo’s impact and there is no doubt that he will leave a massive hole to be filled in Michael Beale’s squad if reports of a pre-contract agreement with Sevilla are accurate.

Of the dozens of clubs that have been linked with Morelos since 2017, Sevilla are probably the one that has been a constant – they were the favourites in the summer too – and few would grudge him for taking the opportunity to get out of a country where he has been treated differently from the rest almost from day one – interestingly though, it wasn’t until Rangers started winning again that the criticism really got ramped up.

When the club put a £20million valuation on Morelos, it seemed neither fanciful nor one that would put potential suitors off with Lille coming closest to prising him away from Ibrox with a £16.25m bid that got rejected.

The board gambled on us winning the league, which we did, in a market that was heavily affected by Covid-19, and also on us qualifying for the Champions League. We didn’t, and as a result, we find ourselves losing our once most valuable player for nothing. If he had left, would we have had the Europa League run, ironically to Seville, in which he played a key role until injury saw his season cut short?

It’s little consolation, but clubs around the continent lose their best talents for free, the key is making sure that you scout and identify the right player to replace them. It’s an aspect of modern football that isn’t going to go away, sporting directors can’t “make” players sign contracts and we certainly shouldn’t be breaking our wage structure for anyone.

No player has ever been bigger than Rangers, no player has ever been irreplaceable. Except maybe Laudrup, or Gazza, or Super Ally….

Pathetic treatment of Alfredo by successive managers has forced him out. Shame on you Rangers.
