When Rangers sold Cedric Itten it was pretty clear that Ross Wilson had identified a striker to bring in the other direction and with both Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos injured, it was vital that we found someone that could be trusted.

Having knocked us out of the Champions League last season, Antonio Colak had proven that he had the ability to score goals and cause problems at that level and when he made it two in two in mid-week against Union Saint-Gilloise to cap a fine performance, the Croatian international answered most if not all of his critics.

Morelos may have scored on his return against Kilmarnock, however, in his two appearances he has also looked a long way off the pace and won’t be rushed back as a result – speaking to Football Insider, former Ger Alan Hutton has backed Colak to keep the Colombian on the bench, on one condition.

“It’s like anything, if you’re playing well and scoring goals you’re going to play.

“I think even though Morelos is back into to team and scored the other day, he’s probably still a little bit off 100 per cent match sharpness so it’s up to Colak to hold on to the position and keep playing at a high level.

“If he does that then he’ll make it difficult for the manager when he has to make that decision. Will it be Morelos or Colak. The only thing he can do is make it hard but at this moment in time, I see Morelos as the number one striker if he stays.“

Hutton is right, as long as Colak is scoring goals and playing well, there is no reason to bring Morelos back in to the starting XI, however, don’t be surprised if – once he is up to full speed – if they start to get rotated more often to keep them fresh – a luxury we haven’t had in recent seasons due to injury and quality.

One thing’s for sure, EL Bufalo will be kicking his heels waiting to get his chance to lead the line again and there’s nothing better that he’d love to do than fire us into the Champions League -hopefully between them they can get the job done.
