“That’s realistic” – Morelos in line for much needed Champions League return

There is still hope – with Alfredo Morelos leading the line, anything is possible.

Last season, against Malmo, he nearly did it, coming out of isolation for the second leg to drag us back into the tie only to – understandably – run out of steam and for the team, and Steven Gerrard, to run out of ideas. This year he will have to go one better though if we are to make it to the next round of Champions League qualification.

Thankfully, there is a glimmer of light at the end of what is a pretty dark tunnel. Giovanni van Bronckhorst had already pencilled him in for a return in the second-leg and the Colombian international was registered with UEFA just in case and, after speaking to the press today, the Gers gaffer was optomistic that El Bufalo will be in line to play some part against Union Saint-Gilloise at Ibrox, as reported by Andy Newport of The Daily Record.

When asked if Morelos cold be back for Tuesday, Gio said:

“Yeah that’s realistic. He’s been training with us for quite some time and is getting sharper every day. 

“Hopefully he will continue and will be there next week.”

Seeing his name in the squad for the weekend’s game against Kilmarnock would be an even bigger boost. You’d think that, after four months out, his match fitness will be pretty poor despite the work he has been doing in the gym and on the training ground.

With Ryan Kent also expected to be back what it does though is improve our chances, any football team who has key players missing will suffer and we are no different. Making up a two goal deficit is no mean feat but with Morelos on the park we might, might, just pull off an historic first.
