Rangers have been beaten by Celtic in the race for Scott Brown’s signature. His agent has revealed that the talented youngster will sign for Celtic.

The news comes as a major blow for Rangers who had hoped to bring the most exciting Scottish prospect in years to Ibrox to team up with his former team mate Kevin Thomson.

Overnight, FA Premiership club Middlesbrough had looked favourites to sign the Hibs star, but it soon became clear that Celtic were prepared to break the bank to bring the youngster to Parkhead.

The Evening Times reported that Brown will cost Celtic around £12 million. That’s £4.5 million on transfer fees plus add ons, as well as a weekly wage of around £25,000.

Celtic have some spare money to spend on wages with Neil Lennon leaving the club, and they also hope to offload the likes of Thomas Gravesen and Jiri Jarosik to free up even more wages. Rangers just couldn’t afford to pay the sort of wages Brown will be on and were therefore priced out.

Most Rangers fans I have spoken to have all agreed that Brown signing for Celtic is a major blow and were desperate to see him pull on the light blue jersey. It wasn’t to be though and Rangers now must concentrate on other targets, which hopefully will include Kilmarnock’s Steven Naismith.
