Michael Beale has always been a good listen. He speaks passionately about all things football and has the ability to get his message across clearly to players. The speed at which Rangers adapted to European football in his first season as first-team coach under Steven Gerrard is a testament to this.

Since stepping out from his former boss’s shadow, Beale has rarely been away from the spotlight, speaking about his time at Rangers or his plans for his own management career – now though, it is what he wants to achieve at Ibrox that has everyone sitting up and taking notice.

Writing in The Daily Record, Barry Ferguson has been impressed with what he has heard so far and is looking forward to seeing how it looks in reality:

“Michael Beale has spent the last couple of days saying all the right things.

“And I have to admit, it’s making me excited to see what his plans for Rangers look like in the flesh.

“I’ve seen clips from the first few days of training and it certainly all seems geared towards an aggressive, high intensity approach.

“The full backs are going to be bombing forward, there’s going to be loads of interchanging in midfield and bodies in the box. And that’s what Rangers fans want to see. I expect it to be similar to the style of play under Steven Gerrard which was so enjoyable to watch.”

It’s easy to say the right things, putting them into practice is another altogether.

Part of the problem latterly under Giovanni van Bronckhorst was that he was so restricted in terms of personnel, for a start, in his last game in charge we ended up with two midfielders playing at centre-half with the five in the squad all out injured. Beale will have a few players back but will still be short of options in some areas.

If he can produce the best of what we saw under Gerrard more often then we will be on to a winner but Fergie has overlooked an issue that saw our last two permanent managers come under criticism – an over reliance on throwing crosses into the box.

Hopefully, Beale, as he has suggested, has developed other game plans to combat this because, if he sticks to his word and delivers the type of football that he is talking about, we could be in for a treat.
