Rangers have made a statement of confidence in Robby McCrorie with the news that the goalkeeper has signed new contract terms, extending his stay at Ibrox until 2025.

This is an intriguing development given that he is effectively third choice within the first team squad at present but changes will be coming in that regard, sooner rather than later.

Goalkeeper coach Colin Stewart was credited with the following statement on the club website, as above:

“This new deal and his recent Scotland call-up show just how highly-rated he is at club and international level, and we look forward to working further with Robby in these next few years.”

Reading between the lines, you would assume that the player has been given some assurances regarding his chance to make a claim for the number one role otherwise it would be a strange call for the 24-year old to commit to the next few years at Ibrox.

Both Stewart and Gio van Bronckhorst are said to rate McCrorie, given his ongoing development and competition alongside Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin, whose respective contracts end in May 2023 and 2024.

His time has to come. There is only one way to find out if he really has what it takes as a Rangers goalkeeper in the long run with regular game time as a necessity. In previous loans including at Premiership level, he has shown himself to be capable whilst most recently he has earned a place in the Scotland set-up under Steve Clarke with a view to the coming years and his full development.
