Writing on his Instagram account this evening, James Maxwell appears to have confirmed his Rangers departure.

The 20-year old spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Ayr United, earning very good feedback in the process of making 34 appearances with five goals and four assists.

In his social media post, Maxwell stated:

“Thank you Rangers FC for everything, met friends for life and had many great experiences, excited to see what’s up next.”

Challenge

Following positive, productive loan spells with Queen of the South and then Ayr United, it is clear that Maxwell has what it takes to make a decent career for himself in the game, with a Premiership breakthrough still possible. At 20, he also has time on his side.

The problem at Ibrox is a blocked patheway and significant competition ahead of him, leading to this exit. Recently, Robbie Fraser signed a new contract, whilst Johnly Yfeko has made a very good initial impact as well as others pushing on.

A pragmatic Maxwell was previously quoted as stating:

“I’ve accepted the fact that I’ll probably need to leave Rangers. At a big club, it’s always hard to break through. I knew my chances would be limited.”

“I’ve just had to focus on my loans, making sure that I get game time and play well. I’ve always had it in the back of my head that if it didn’t happen for me, I needed to have a career regardless.”

The senior experience gained by Maxwell over recent seasons has to be used to his advantage in the coming months so it will be interesting to see where he signs his next deal.

Previously, he was linked with Leeds whilst reports in the last week have stated that Partick boss Ian McCall is said to want the left sided man at Firhill next season, as well as Kai Kennedy.

One step back can be a base for a big stride forward. All the best to James Maxwell.
