Rangers stated today that there are three candidates in the race to become the next manager of the club.

It is widely established that former player Giovanni van Bronckhorst is the leading contender as well as the runaway fans favourite to replace the departed Steven Gerrard.

With press briefings issued today, the Ibrox club have stated that they won’t rush the appointment as much as they are diligently working to have the right man in place as soon as possible – however who else could be in the running?

Reports of Frank Lampard have been dismissed and whilst Dean Smith was mentioned following his dismissal at Aston Villa, but he has now been installed as Norwich’s new manager.

Could another former Ranger, Rino Gattuso be in the fight, or what about the German, Daniel Farke after his exit from the Canaries?

Closer to home in Scotland, there aren’t really any credible options that would satisfy the supporters or be able to take on the mantle from Gerrard? Uninformed tabloid reports of Derek McInnes just don’t stand up to scrutiny.

Frank de Boer and Ronald Koeman have also been mentioned by some outlets but those options seem very much like outsiders for several reasons.

One of the reports earlier included:

“Sky Sports News has been told the talks with Van Bronckhorst were focused on the short and long-term strategy of the club and although contract terms were not discussed, it is believed the Dutchman’s values and ideas are aligned with Rangers.”

We are now at the pivotal stage in terms of discussions with Giovanni van Bronckhorst with further talks having taken place during Monday. If all is agreed on terms following the positive dialogue at the weekend, it could be that tomorrow is the day that Rangers get their man.
