There are some rumours that will never be far away from Rangers, those old enough will remember Jardel or Alan Smith but n recent seasons it has been the likelihood of Lewis Ferguson fulfilling what many see as his destiny.

The Scottish Sun has reported that the Aberdeen midfielder remains a target for Steven Gerrard with the Light Blues facing competition from Watford who have had a bid in the region of £2million rejected for the Scotland youth cap.

The 21-year old still has three years to run on his Pittodrie contract and Stephen Glass, the recently appointed Dons manager has no intentions of letting him go any time soon, especially not on the cheap:

“Lewis has played in cup finals and he’s going to be an international player.

“I don’t need to convince Lewis to stay — he loves it at the club.

“If someone comes in for him, they are going to need a lot of money to get him away from here.”

Ferguson has the potential to replace the sort of output that Scott Arfield currently generates, however, Ross Wilson would be unlikely to go much higher than the fee that has been rejected, when you consider our entire midfield cost less than £500,000, money spent doesn’t always equate to quality.

The comparison between Ferguson and Allan Campbell is an interesting one, the Motherwell man might not be as productive in the final third in terms of goals but he looks like he has a higher ceiling in terms of potential and in terms of Steven Gerrard being able to mould him into his own player – he is also available on a free transfer, with a relatively small development fee.

Ferguson is a good player but, as we’ve already seen since Wilson arrived as sporting director, there are bargains to be had both in England and abroad, and he certainly isn’t stubborn enough to overpay just to get his man, he’ll simply go to the next name on the list.
