The perennial debate about whether or not Lewis Ferguson is good enough to be a Rangers player should we make an approach to sign him looks to have been a pointless one after a recent revelation by a reliable source.

Jordan Campbell of The Athletic has posted on his Twitter feed that we do not see Ferguson as a target and that we won’t be moving for him any time soon.

Given our current midfield portfolio, it really isn’t a surprise, especially when you consider that Aberdeen turned down a bid for him in the January transfer window from the Premier League and are now said to want £3million for him, there is no chance they would sell him to us without a premium of some sort too.

It’s unfair to dismiss the 23-year old as not being good enough purely because he isn’t his dad or his uncle, he is a very competent player in his own right, it’s just that he isn’t better than what we have or worth what is being charged.

We also have to consider the emergence of Alex Lowry, Charlie McCann and Cole McKinnon to the first-team and ask whether or not they have a higher ceiling that the Aberdeen midfielder, spending a few million pound on a midfielder who isn’t guaranteed to start when we have some very talented ones of our own isn’t the best use of money.

Lowry and McCann are different types of player but McKinnon, in particular, is worthy of comparison in that he is more of a box to box midfielder, personally, I’d rather develop our own talent rather than dig deep to line the pockets of other SPFL clubs for theirs.
